Mixed ethnicity marriage leads to murder of husband, confiscation of home and death threats of wife

The Tutsi RPF regime are using the 1994 genocide as an excuse to kill, imprison and oppress Hutus. Even so, on 28 January 2000 I married a Hutu man. Shortly afterwards, my husband was abducted by RPF officers. He has been missing ever since. The following night, four soldiers stormed our home, raped me and threw me out of the house. The house and all its contents have since been confiscated.

I fled to the home of a neighbour, but three days later soldiers arrived then beat and threatened to kill her because they knew she was hiding me. Consequently, I was forced to flee to the home of another friend, but on 2 June, the same soldiers raided her home with the intention of killing me. I managed to escape out the back door and decided this time to flee the country.

In my host country I moved into a hostel managed by a Rwandan-speaking woman of Tutsi origin, but after she found out I was a Rwandan refugee she tried to blackmail me. She cooperated with the authorities in a plot to have me abducted and deported to Rwanda, but I narrowly escaped the attempt made in January 2003. Now as a precaution, I continually relocate from one suburb to another, but even so, I have been attacked twice. The UNHCR recognised the threats to my personal safety and helped me make a request for resettlement in Australia, but my request was declined for reasons I have never been informed of. Finally, in October 2006, I barely escaped another abduction attempt while on my way to an appointment. I have since spotted one of my attempted kidnappers in the city and as a result, live in perpetual fear.
